There is much berating of Apple’s policy on allowing, or disallowing, Apps into the iOS AppStore.  In the early days Apple were very strict on what was permitted, however over the years they have learned from their errors and are a little more lenient.

What about the Adroid Market?  For now, there is far less control and this can not be a good thing for the consumer

Google+ have today opened their doors to teenagers.  Until now the Social Networking site has been the domain of ‘adults’ however, with some special filters and assistance for our younger people, Google are throwing open the doors.

Minimum age is now 13 years and they will have some extra controls to try to keep them safe online.

A story has surfaced today which is very concerning.  If you are using the O2 mobile network in the UK you are sending your mobile phone number to every website you visit using the mobile phone.  This means website developers can grab your number without your consent!

UPDATE:  O2 have now rectified the problem and apologise.  The issue was evident from 10 January 2011 and fixed at 2pm today.  The full detail in their blog post.  This does make a mockery of the “O2 Guru” who implied it was normal to send your mobile number (see later in this post).

After the launch of Evi yesterday the server(s) over at True Knowledge went in to melt down and it appears like almost no one could use the system.  An epic fail for a launch.

Today they have finally responded to the concerns of their users in a quick blog post explaining the Server Issues — no indication of a fix time; no apology; just a ‘thanks for your support’ type message.

Incredibly my review of Evi has generated a massive amount of traffic.  Since I published it twelve hours ago it has generated 78% of all my hits.  Clearly a very popular topic, and lots of frustration.

UPDATE:  Another update from the guys at True Knowledge

Since the launch of Siri on the iPhone 4S there has been a number of alternative ‘voice’ apps appear.  True Knowledge announce Evi  in an attempt to introduce some artificial intelligence onto our mobile device.

Rather than pitching it as a Siri replacement/competitor it has been positioned as a knowledge tool.  Think of it as Google on steroids!

Quoting from the ‘sales pitch’

Evi is the revolutionary artificial intelligence here to help with your everyday information needs.

For those suffering the poor battery life on the Lumia 800, Nokia have finally announced a software update they claim addresses the issue.

The update is being rolled out in the coming two weeks in a phased approach.  The device will receive a notification that a software update is available and the user must then plug it into the computer and download the update using the desktop software.

The update will bring the software on the phone to version 1600.2483.8106.11500

Apparently 300 million new websites were born in 2011, bringing the total to 555 million.

There are just over 2 billion internet users but slightly more than 3 billion email accounts.  71% of the worlds emails was Spam.

Estimations suggest 100 billion(!) images on Facebook and the iPhone 4 is the most popular camera on Flick.

All these, and many more amazing numbers, were researched by the boffins at Pingdom – Internet 2011 in numbers
