It has been just nine days since iOS6 was launched to the world and much has been written about the update, not least the new mapping. Today Apple took the unprecedented step of issuing a formal apology.
As part of the operating system upgrade for iPhones and iPads the Mapping tool was replaced with Apples own product rather than Google Maps as in past versions. Reports prior to the launch suggested it was not ready for release; I had been using it for some months as part of the developer program and, along with many others, had offered similar feedback to Apple. However they went ahead and updated -- which begs the question 'What is the point of beta tester feedback'?
In summary they are holding their hands up, finally, and admitting they got it wrong.
We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.
What is perhaps quite brave of them is that they suggest using an alternative while they work hard at fixing it.
While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.
It's a big risk but I think one they had to take. They have frustrated many users and while they may alienate some by pointing them to other apps it is the right thing to do in this fiasco.
At this point one would expect Google to step up with the Google Maps App however there are no official reports such a product is ready for release.
I'm sure Apple will be working hard to rectify their mess, and personally I hope they can produce something functional. Let's face it....competition is good; it will keep Google on their toes if Apple step up to the game with a strong product. Evidence is already appearing of Google ramping up their mapping tools with new features.
